Overview

The Valley School Middle School includes students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8.  Each student has a required core program of classes, but also has the opportunity to select from a group of elective options.  We feel it is important for students to choose some of their own classes.  This action increases experiences in decision-making, builds self-esteem, confidence, and independence, and allows students to take responsibility for their own actions and learn to live with choices.

Our middle school program concentrates on the acquisition of skills.  Valley views strong skills as important building blocks for success in a high school program as well as in college and beyond.  Examples of important skills are:  Reading comprehension, effective written and oral communication skills, problem solving skills, logic and reasoning skills, group dynamics, and leadership skills.  Most of the time, middle school students are grouped by grades.  There are times when the four grades are blended together, while at other times they are grouped by age, ability or interest.

In order to develop group dynamics, leadership skills, and intellectual abilities, the middle school program encourages participation in:

Non-threatening, ungraded activities including conferences and seminars.

Midwest Talent Search programs.

In-class individual assignments and activities appropriately matched to ability.

Writing articles for school publications.

Touring prospective students and parents.

Tutoring peers.

Aiding in lower school classrooms.

Organizing school events.
